Battery D Site, Battle of Helena

Union Battery D covers about one acre of the hillside on Hindman Hill (visible in a Civil War image of the Battle of Helena).  It has remained basically unaltered since the Civil War, when Confederates tried unsuccessfully to retake Helena. It is not open to the public at this time, but a historic marker is placed on Military Road. A second marker at the site traces the attack and subsequent retreat by General Fagan's Confederate troops. A marker in the Battery C area, titled "A Terrific Fire from Graveyard Hill," looks toward Battery D and is located on Yorkshire Drive east of Audubon Drive.
