Levon Helm Memorial

Mark Lavon (Levon) Helm was born in 1940 in Phillips County and grew up in and around the town of Marvell, where he lived and worked on his family's cotton farm in the small community of Turkey Scratch.  During his early years in Phillips County, he developed a love for music that would propel him to become a member of "The Band," an acclaimed Canadian rock group. Following the demise of The Band, he continued to have a successful career leading his own band, as well as acting in numerous motion pictures. He died in 2012.

The Levon Helm boyhood home, originally located in Turkey Scratch across from the A.B. Thompson store, has been permanently relocated to downtown Marvell (eight miles away), where it is more easily accessible from its once remote location. Here, visitors can easily access it just two blocks off Hwy. 49, where soon they will be able to take a tour when it's restored to it's near original state and see a bronze bust of Levon that will be placed nearby.  A stop on the Arkansas Delta Music Trail: Sounds from the Soil and Soul.
