Origin of Name: First named Clayton for John M. Clayton, member of the Arkansas Senate and brother of Powell Clayton, first Reconstruction Governor of Arkansas (1868-71). Name changed Dec. 6, 1875. Some say name changed because of political disapproval of Powell Clayton. May also have been changed to honor noted Southern Statesman Henry Clay
