Piggott, originally named Houston, was established in 1882 when a sawmill was located on the yet-uncompleted railroad through the area. A year later, the post office, located a few miles northwest, was moved to town and renamed in honor of Dr. James A. Piggott, who earlier had successfully petitioned to get the post office for the area.
