Paragould was established in 1882 when two rival railroad companies, led by Jay Gould and J. W. Paramore, laid tracks that crossed in this region of uncultivated timber. Town promoters first called it Para-Gould, but Gould objected to being last in a hyphenated name. It was voted county seat in 1884.
