Founded in 1905, this town was named after Abner McGehee, a successful, local farmer. The town was not frimly populated until the Memphis, Helena & Saint Louis railway completed its line in 1906, the year the town was incorporated. It is said that De Soto may have passed through the future site of McGehee, and one account states that he may have died nearby.
