This town was originally funded in 1852 by Ed Smith, and named Big Lake Island. In 1901 the name was changed to Manila, in honor of the U.S. naval victory at Manila Bay, in the Philippines, during the Spanish-American War. It is interesting to note that the downtown streets are named for battleships who participated in the Battle of Manila.
